As
the fastest growing exercise method in years, Pilates' popularity
has grown because it works for all bodies, of all shapes and
sizes. Pilates is one of the most versatile and effective
forms of exercise. But more than exercise, Pilates
is an integrated approach to movement, comprising principles
of body awareness, alignment, breathing, coordination, core
engagement and precision in movement, all working together
to create a flowing, effective practice.
At Studio Evolve, we recognize and expect that you
will change. To support that evolution, your training
will change to fit your growing needs. Each session
is focused on you. We believe that personalized sessions
produce the most effective results, and are confident you’ll
see and feel the benefit of this approach!

How is Pilates different from Yoga and other types of exercise?
The most unique principle of Pilates is its constant
focus on deep core and pelvic floor stabilization through
all the exercises. Like Yoga, it is a “mindful”
practice that requires awareness and concentration to perform
correctly. Both Yoga and Pilates also use the breath as a
primary component to their regimens. Pilates is a sequence
of exercises meant to flow in a particular way, yet easily
modified if necessary. It is limitless in its scope,
low impact and incredibly successful at creating dynamic results
for all kinds of people.
What is the difference between Apparatus work and Mat
work?
In
mat/floor work your main resistance is the weight of your
own body against gravity. On the apparatus, the varied weight
of several springs helps mitigate the effects of gravity.
The springs can be used to increase or decrease the challenge
of work or even to work a completely different set of muscles.
There are basic, intermediate and advanced exercises in both
modes of work.
At Studio Evolve we focus on apparatus work because we find
it yields the most benefit to our clients. Our instructors
use the mat when appropriate, but we do not teach large mat
classes. We are happy to bring mat work into your sessions
if you would like to add knowledge to your home routine.
Will Pilates help me lose
weight?
Pilates strengthens your muscles and does burn calories, but
it is not aerobic. However, many clients report their shape
changes as their posture improves and muscle tone increases;
as a result they appear thinner.
Who can do Pilates?
Almost everyone! Our clients are men and women who range in
age from teenagers to seniors and who vary widely in their
health and fitness levels. Pilates can be modified
easily for just about anyone.
“For
this 60-something year old woman, Pilates has been a godsend…
I can walk into a session on the reformer feeling like a VERY
old lady and walk out having literally shed years. It is without
a doubt the best exercise I have ever found!” —
Elizabeth
Pilates and Pregnancy.
Pilates is one of the best ways to bring your body
back to life after having a baby. We recommend you
wait at least 8 weeks to begin your Pilates practice. If you
are pregnant, please consult your physician before beginning
any new type of exercise program. We are happy to work with
you after you’ve received the go ahead from your doctor.
We have designed a private
room just for new moms. We welcome you and your
new little one to experience the joy of being able to work
out without the worry of childcare.
Can I learn and do Pilates
on my own?
Yes, there are many good books and videos/DVDs available.
However, these resources have one limitation in common —
they can't give you feedback about your performance of the
exercises. We recommend getting started with 5 – 10
private sessions before practicing Pilates at home. Learning
the fundamentals from a professional with immediate and knowledgeable
feedback will allow you to experience more effective results
with your home practice. |
