Troy Bonnes, a Ballard photographer, is debuting his work from a recent trip to New Zealand. His series “Aotearoa: The Land of the Long White Cloud” will be on display at Studio Evolve through the end of May.

“My art is centered on the idea that so much of the beauty around us is often overlooked, that the patterns and rhythms of nature produce more than just pretty leaves and impressive mountains, but also rust, grime and decay. In a society where we seem to be in an arms race with increasingly advanced and sophisticated methods of diversion (shopping malls, fast cars, and an army of glowing electronic screens), I try to show through my photography that there are other things that exist naturally that can provide just as much pleasure and fulfillment if we stop and take the time to seek them out. Whether by taking a slow and thoughtful walk or by simply changing our physical perspectives, we are given views to hidden worlds that exist right in front of us. Appreciation of beauty (in all her forms) should not be limited to framed pieces of art or bimonthly visits to museums; instead, we should seek her out everywhere, always, so that we might know how truly fortunate we are to exist in her presence. I make no claim that this is a novel idea; merely that it is one worth propagating.
