Pilates For Seniors and Older Adults in Seattle - Movement That Works With Your Body, Not Against it

Why Pilates is especially well-suited for older adults

As you get older, incorporating strength training into your regular routine become increasingly important for your long-term health.

Regular strength training can help you maintain bone mass and prevent osteoporosis and osteopenia, maintain muscle mass so you can stay active and independent into your retirement, improve your metabolic health, and keep your brain active and healthy.

But lots of strength training programs emphasize high-impact exercises and heavier weights that can be hard on your joints, make you sore for DAYS and might even reactivate an old injury in you overdo it.

Pilates is different. It’s naturally low-impact, and at Studio Evolve, we tailor your sessions to you - so you can build strength and mobility while staying safe.

Plus, we focus on functional exercises that help you get strong in ways you’ll actually use in everyday life - like getting up and down from the floor to play with your grandkids, lift your suitcase into the overhead bin when you travel, and carrying your own groceries into your eighties and beyond.

WHAT changes as we age - and how Pilates addresses that

It’s true - gradual muscle loss IS a part of the natural aging process. But, with a sustainable strength training routine you can stay consistent with for the long run, you CAN maintain your muscle mass - so you can keep hiking and walking around Seattle, show up for your family, and enjoy your retirement.

Pilates is also excellent for helping you maintain your balance and coordination, which can otherwise decline with age as well - critical for preventing falls and protecting your long-term health.

And those aches and pains that seem to keep popping up more and more often? Pilates helps with that, too. By strengthening weak muscles, gently mobilizing your body, and helping you release excess tension, Pilates is excellent for reducing pain in the back, knees, shoulders, neck, and more.

We’ve even had clients who were headed towards surgery and were able to avoid it or significantly postpone it by managing pain through their Pilates practice!

And if you HAVE had surgery or a recent injury, or you’re planning for a knee or hip replacement sometime soon, Pilates can help your recovery go smoothly. In fact, lots of our clients first join us after a surgery, when they’re “graduating” from PT, or after experiencing an injury or a fall.

Private sessions vs. big group classes: why it matters more as you get older

If you’ve tried group exercise classes and felt like you were always falling behind, or you never knew if you were doing the exercises right, we understand.

That’s why, at Studio Evolve in Seattle, we offer Pilates through private sessions and semi-private Reformer classes - both excellent options for seniors.

For adults over 65, we usually recommend starting with private Pilates sessions here at our Wallingford studio. In a private session, your instructor will chat with you about your goals for your practice and any concerns or sensitivities you may have - and then tailor the movement session specifically to meet your needs.

Many of our senior clients choose to stick with private sessions, so they can get a customized movement experience that can be adjusted to meet their body’s changing needs.

Others choose to move on to semi-private Reformer classes once they’ve got the basics down and they’re active and injury-free. Semi-private classes are limited to just five students, so you’ll still benefit from lots of individualized attention from your instructor - NOT like group exercise classes at the big box gyms.

What our oldest clients say (and yes, our oldest active client is 92)

At our Seattle Pilates studio, we serve clients from their 30s to their 90s, and LOVE helping our older clients stay fit, mobile, and active.

Like Bev, in her 70s, who came to us after having two hip replacements.

“I thought I would never walk again without thinking about how difficult every step was. Now I spend most of my day walking without thinking anything but ‘ can’t believe I’m doing this well,’ says Bev.

And like Willy, in his 70s, who found Studio Evolve after he moved to Seattle and takes duet sessions with his wife.

“The goal is to be able to keep moving as we get older, and not just to age and fall apart. We have friends who are not as active as us, and I would like to stay active as long as we possibly can. I find that Pilates helps me achieve that.”

What to expect when you start

When you sign up for your first session, we recommend showing up 10 minutes early for your first session to give yourself time to park, and get settled. No need to dress up - just wear comfortable clothes you can move in, and bring a water bottle to stay hydrated. Once you’re here, we’ll guide you through the rest!

You’ll fill out a brief intake form and your instructor will chat with you about how you’re feeling in your body, what you’d like to get out of your practice, any injuries or tweaky spots you have and any worries you may have.

Then they’ll guide you through a personalized movement session designed to help you build strength and mobility, release excess tension, and improve your balance, posture, and coordination.

You’ll leave feeling energized, balanced, and ready to take on the rest of your day!
