GYROTONIC in seattle
Gyrotonic Expansion System® is a movement method that works with the body’s natural spirals and arcs and feels like flowing, three-dimensional movement rather than straight lines and repetitions. It uses specialized, adjustable equipment and is taught in private sessions, making it accessible to complete beginners and experienced movers alike. Studio Evolve has offered Gyrotonic in Seattle’s Wallingford neighborhood since 2006.
What you can expect from Gyrotonic sessions:
Movements flow continuously into each other, feeling like swimming or dancing
Joints move through their full natural range of motion, without jarring or compression
Chronically tight areas begin to release, often within the first session
Balance and coordination improve as your nervous system learns new movement patterns
You stand taller, with more length and less effort
Strength builds alongside flexibility
Most clients leave their first session feeling longer, lighter and more at home in their body than when they walked in. If that sounds like something your body has been asking for, you’re in the right place.
“Working together we have transformed my body into one that I feel I actually am living in, not just taking up space in. Every session is different and tuned specifically to what is going on with my body (and brain!) on a given day. ”

Specialized Equipment
The human body is designed to work as one harmonious system, to follow arcing and spiraling paths of motion, and to transition from one movement to the next smoothly and efficiently. Gyrotonic Method creator, Juliu Horvath, designed a specialized line of equipment around these natural movement patterns. Because Gyrotonic equipment is highly adjustable, it can be customized to fit each person’s unique physique and ability, adapting for things such as height, arm/leg length and range of motion.

In a word - no - most people are surprised by how quickly they pick up on the movements. The equipment is fully adjustable to your height and range of motion. Your first session is an introduction: moving through the basic Gyrotonic movement patterns, feeling how the machine supports you and starting to discover what your body can do. We’ve been introducing people to Gyrotonic in Seattle since 2006, and the most common thing we hear after a first session is some version of “I didn’t know my body could feel like that.”

Gyrotonic is a movement method to build around the way the body naturally moves - spirals, arcs and flowing sequences rather than straight lines. Where Pilates tends to work in more linear, controlled patterns, Gyrotonic feels more like dancing or swimming - more of a flow. The two methods complement each other well and many of our clients do both. If Pilates has ever felt a little rigid or linear for your body, Gyrotonic often feels like water.

Gyrotonic sessions are a great complement to a traditional physical therapy program and can make a significant contribution to the recovery process. Physical therapists use Gyrotonic exercises in their clinics to help their patients recover from injury and work with disabilities. Due to the focus on joint stability, muscle balance, and functional strength, Gyrotonic sessions are an ideal post-rehabilitation exercise option.
Gyrotonic was originally developed by a professional dancer reahabilitating his own injuries.
Studio Evolve owner, Martine Dedek rehabilitated her shoulders after a roll over car accident with regular Gyrotonic sessions over a decade ago.

Gyrotonic Expansion System Method creator, Juliu Horvath was a professional athlete and originally developed the Gyrotonic Expansion System Method as a way to train and rehabilitate himself and other professional athletes. Whether a weekend warrior, or competing at a professional level, athletes can experience profound improvements in performance and injury prevention with a regular Gyrotonic practice.

Clients often describe it as somewhere between a deep stretch, a dance and a massage. Each movement flows into the next without stopping, which means your nervous system stays engaged the whole time rather than bracing and releasing.
Becky, one of our longtime clients, described it as finally feeling like she was actually living in her body rather than just taking up space in it.
-
Most clients feel better after their first session - you leave feeling a sense of more space in your spine, less tension in areas that are chronically tight. Deeper changes, where you start repatterining how you move in daily life, tend to build over 4-6 weeks of regular practice.
Once a week is great start and twice a week significantly speeds up your learning curve with this style of movement.

All Gyrotonic sessions at Studio Evolve are privates or duets, which means your first session is entirely focused on you and where you are at today. Our 2 Private Session Intro Pkg is the easiest way to start.
You don’t need any experience or background in movement. You just need to show up - and we’ll develop a practice for you.
