What The Fitness Industry Gets Wrong

How people talk about their bodies in the fitness industry makes me really uncomfortable.

How often do you hear these comments from fitness coaches, gym instructors or your own internal voice:

  •  Feel the burn

  •  No pain, no gain

And in Pilates studios everywhere?

  • What kind of torture do you have for me today?

It makes me really uncomfortable when it sounds like I need to punish myself in order to be comfortable in my own skin or to love myself?

Shame Is Not A Healthy Motivator

Personally, it makes me uncomfortable when a good instructor is asked to be a task-master or when the message of a gym or a studio is, “We’re okay with your bad body, you can bring it here so that you can make it better.” This implies that shaming someone about their body is a healthy motivator for movement. This implies that some bodies are good, while some are not.

What Our Team Is Working On

In response to this common industry belief, our team has been working behind the scenes to really revamp and refine our mission statement. Studio Evolve is all for nurturing a healthy and supportive relationship with our bodies and that’s what we want to be known for.

We want people who come to us to experience BIG JOY and LOVE as the fuel that gets them where they want to go. We support their movement journey whatever pace and route they want to take!

We want our clients to look forward to being at the studio and at our classes because they enjoy their sessions, not just because they are forcing themselves or because they have to!

“We appreciate and honor how your body has served you well and gotten you here. My own self-talk can be very harsh and critical and finding appreciation for my coping skills is sometimes a struggle. In my own process of seeking change or growing strength, I am sometimes surprised by how powerful of a force joy and love and acceptance is, when my upbringing would say that suffering and work and pain are what is needed to drive me forward. As I practice this for myself, I want to see how far this fuel of JOY and LOVE can take us all here at Studio Evolve”

-Martine, Studio Evolve Founder/Owner

If this resonates with you, we’d love to see you be part of our community. We will support you and encourage movement, infused with joy!

Your body is home.

We’ll see you soon!

OWNER; SPRE® EDUCATIONAL FOUNDER, PRACTITIONER TRAINER & PRACTITIONER, SHE/HER

Martine enjoys the diverse learning opportunities studio ownership has allowed her. She began her career in the field of movement and bodies as a Pilates Instructor in 1999. Soon after her original Pilates certification, Martine pursued numerous other certifications and sought to bring her client offerings and business acumen to one place in the founding of Studio Evolve, Pilates, Gyrotonic & SPRe® Bodywork.

Along her journey, Martine partnered with Jill Ableson for the development of the SPRe® Practitioner Training Program. Together they have brought the SPRe® Training Curriculum to its current evolution as a licensed Somatic Education Training Program and WA State Vocational Training School.

Working with Martine is both grounding and expansive. She enjoys the practice of energetically, verbally and somatically attuning with and guiding clients. Her use of SPRe® Bodywork, as well as her curiosity and engagement leads to delightful moments of clarity and greater physical comfort for her clients.

Martine feels an essential component to building a strong partnership with her client is a foundation of trust, openness and curiosity. This allows for the safe and supportive exploration of whatever difficult, confusing or conflicting emotional and somatic experiences arise in the journey they take together.
